Carton count formula (RFCI-aligned)

Cartons = ⌈(length × width × (1 + waste_factor)) ÷ carton_coverage⌉

Net area (length × width, minus any cutout for L-shape rooms) is multiplied by the waste factor — 10% for straight layouts, 15% for diagonal. The gross area is divided by the carton coverage from the product label and rounded up to the next whole carton. Always round up — partial cartons are not sold at retail. Having one spare carton protects against damage and future repairs from the same dye lot.

Adhesive formula (glue-down only)

Adhesive (gal) = ⌈gross_sqft ÷ 250⌉

Adhesive coverage of 250 sqft per gallon is the conservative midpoint from the Armstrong S-995 LVP adhesive technical data sheet (TDS) for U-notch trowel application. Range varies 150–400 sqft/gal by trowel notch size and subfloor porosity. Always check the specific product label — the trowel notch size printed on the adhesive container determines actual coverage.

How This Calculator Works

Net vs gross area. Your room's net area is the bare floor space — length × width (in feet), minus any cutout for L-shaped rooms. The gross area adds the waste factor on top: the extra material needed for end cuts at walls, staggered row offsets, and unusable short pieces. Straight layouts add 10% (cuts are short reusable pieces); diagonal layouts add 15% (triangular offcuts at every wall edge cannot be reused). Waste factors per RFCI installation guidelines and 7-source industry convergence.

Carton rounding. LVP is sold by the carton (box), not by the plank. The calculator always rounds up to the next whole carton — even if the fractional overage is 0.1 cartons — because partial cartons are not sold at retail. Having one spare carton protects against damage during install and allows future repairs from the same production lot (dye-lot matching).

Install type branching. The three install methods produce different material needs. Click-lock floating is the most common DIY method — planks snap together and float over underlayment. If your planks have attached foam pad, you don't buy separate underlayment (the calculator returns null). Adding extra cushion under attached-pad LVP creates instability and voids most manufacturer warranties. Glue-down requires full-spread adhesive (no underlayment); the calculator returns adhesive gallons at 250 sqft/gal per Armstrong S-995 TDS. Loose-lay requires neither adhesive nor underlayment.

Concrete subfloor moisture barrier. Concrete wicks moisture vapor upward through LVP seams regardless of install method or attached underlayment. Even "waterproof" LVP labels do not mean the subfloor moisture is handled — the vapor path is through the seams and edges. The calculator flags a 6-mil polyethylene barrier requirement any time concrete is selected, adding 10% for seam overlap and tape. This is the single most-overlooked item by basement LVP buyers.

Acclimation and expansion gap. Stack unopened cartons flat in the installation room for 24–48 hours before laying. LVP expands and contracts with temperature — skipping acclimation causes buckling at seams within weeks. Leave a 1/4" expansion gap at all walls and vertical obstacles (pipes, islands, cabinets). Use plastic spacers during install and remove them before baseboard goes back. The baseboard or quarter-round covers the gap.

L-shape room calculation. For L-shaped rooms, the calculator subtracts the cutout rectangle from the total bounding rectangle. Enter the outer room dimensions (length × width) and the dimensions of the rectangular section to remove. The cutout must be smaller than the room in both dimensions — the calculator validates this and shows an error if the geometry is invalid.

Common Mistakes — Vinyl Plank Flooring

Three errors that consistently ruin LVP installs or void manufacturer warranties.

"My planks are buckling at the seams."

Cause: skipped acclimation. Stack unopened cartons flat in the installation room for 24–48 hours before laying. LVP expands with temperature and humidity — planks installed cold in a warm room will buckle as they expand. Skipping this step voids most manufacturer warranties and is the leading cause of LVP seam failure in the first season.

"I added foam underlayment on top of the attached pad."

Cause: double-padding under click-lock LVP. Adding extra cushion under attached-pad LVP creates too much give — the planks rock underfoot and the click-lock joints fail over time from repeated flex. Modern click-lock LVP with built-in foam pad requires NO additional underlayment. Most manufacturers specifically prohibit it in the installation guide. Check before buying.

"My basement LVP is showing mold spots underneath."

Cause: skipped 6-mil polyethylene moisture barrier on a concrete subfloor. Concrete is porous and continuously wicks ground moisture upward. Even LVP with attached underlayment cannot stop this vapor path — moisture migrates through seams and edges. A 6-mil poly sheet (taped at seams) laid before the planks costs under $50 for a typical room and prevents catastrophic mold growth that requires a full floor tearout to fix.

Vinyl Plank Flooring Terminology

LVP (Luxury Vinyl Plank)
A multi-layer composite flooring product built around a rigid or flexible PVC core, topped with a printed wear layer that mimics wood, stone, or tile. Sold in long planks (typically 4–9" wide × 36–60" long) that interlock or adhere to the subfloor. LVP is fully waterproof at the wear layer (though seams can wick moisture), more dimensionally stable than hardwood or laminate, and tolerant of below-grade installations. It is sometimes called "rigid core LVP," "SPC" (stone plastic composite), "WPC" (wood plastic composite), or simply "vinyl plank."
LVP and LVT (luxury vinyl tile) share the same core technology — LVP is the plank format used to mimic wood; LVT is the tile format used to mimic stone or ceramic.
Click-lock (floating)
An installation method where LVP planks snap together via an interlocking tongue-and-groove edge profile — no adhesive, no fasteners. The assembled floor floats as a unit over underlayment (or directly over the subfloor when planks have attached pad). The most common DIY method: faster to install, easier to remove, and forgiving of minor subfloor imperfections. Requires a 1/4" expansion gap at all walls to allow seasonal movement.
Many modern LVP products include a pre-attached underlayment pad — adding extra underlayment beneath these can void the manufacturer warranty.
Glue-down
An installation method where the full underside of each plank is bonded to the subfloor using a full-spread vinyl flooring adhesive (typically a water-based acrylic such as Armstrong S-995 or equivalent). No underlayment is used. Glue-down creates a stiffer floor than click-lock floating and is preferred over very flat concrete subfloors and in commercial applications. Adhesive coverage is typically 150–400 sqft per gallon depending on trowel notch size; this calculator uses 250 sqft/gal — the conservative midpoint matching most U-notch product specs.

Loose-lay
An installation method where heavy LVP planks (typically 5 mm or thicker) are laid directly on the subfloor with no adhesive and no click-lock — held in place by their own weight, friction with a high-grip backing, and optional perimeter tackifier. Useful for renters, temporary installations, and rooms with frequent moisture exposure where individual planks may need replacement. Not all LVP products are rated for loose-lay; check the product spec sheet.
Attached underlayment
A pre-bonded foam or cork pad on the underside of an LVP plank, integrated by the manufacturer for cushioning, sound dampening, and minor subfloor smoothing. Most modern click-lock LVP includes attached underlayment. When the plank has attached pad, you should NOT add a separate underlayment beneath it — the doubled cushion creates instability that can fail the click-lock joints and void the warranty.
Concrete subfloors still require a 6-mil polyethylene moisture barrier even when LVP has attached underlayment.
Moisture barrier
A 6-mil polyethylene film installed directly on a concrete subfloor before LVP. Concrete releases moisture vapor continuously; without a barrier, this vapor migrates up through plank seams and causes mold beneath the floor, adhesive failure (in glue-down installs), and core swelling. Required for ALL LVP installs over concrete — even with attached underlayment, even for "waterproof" LVP. Wood subfloors do not strictly require a moisture barrier but a vapor-resistant underlayment is recommended for spill protection.
Lay the moisture barrier first, overlap seams 6–12", and tape every seam. Some integrated underlayment products include a moisture barrier — verify before purchasing a separate sheet.
Expansion gap
A 1/4" continuous gap left between the LVP planks and every fixed object — walls, door casings, cabinets, fireplace surrounds, columns. LVP expands and contracts with temperature changes, especially over heated subfloors and in rooms with large temperature swings. Without the expansion gap the floor will buckle, peak at seams, or push out walls. The gap is later concealed by baseboard or quarter-round molding. Use 1/4" floor spacers during installation; remove them before installing trim.
For installations larger than 40 ft in any direction, increase the perimeter gap to 3/8" and add an interior expansion gap covered by a T-molding strip.
Acclimation
The 24–48 hour period during which unopened cartons of LVP are stored in the install room before starting the install, allowing the planks to reach the room's ambient temperature and humidity. Skipping acclimation is the single most common reason for buckling and seam-splitting in newly installed LVP — and most manufacturers void the warranty if acclimation is not documented. Stack cartons flat (not on edge), in the room of installation, away from direct sunlight or heat vents.
In rooms with significant temperature or humidity differences from the rest of the home, extend acclimation to 72 hours.
Waste factor (overage)
The percentage of extra material you order above the measured room area to cover cut-offs at walls, staggered row offsets, and layout-pattern offcuts. This calculator uses RFCI-aligned field-practice values: straight layout 10%, diagonal layout 15%. Diagonal cuts at 45° produce triangular wall offcuts that cannot be reused — hence the higher 15% allowance. Always round up to whole cartons.

"My LVP floor is bubbling or lifting off the concrete. What caused this?"

Bubbling on glue-down LVP almost always means excessive moisture vapor rising through a concrete subfloor that was not properly tested or sealed. RFCI installation guidelines require a 6-mil polyethylene vapor barrier on all concrete-on-grade and below-grade installations; most manufacturers (Shaw, Mohawk, Coretec) specify moisture testing of ≤ 3 lb/1,000 sq ft/24 hr (MVER) or ≤ 75% RH before any LVP goes down. RFCI and Mohawk S-288 guidelines require the slab to be primed if porous, free of dust and curing compounds, and within the adhesive's working window at the time of placement. "My LVP floor is buckling or has a ridge forming at a joint. What caused this?"

Peaking or buckling means the floor has no room to expand. LVP expands with temperature and humidity changes; manufacturer guides from Coretec, Shaw, and Cali Bamboo all require a 1/4–3/8 inch expansion gap at every fixed vertical surface — walls, cabinets, door frames, and hearths. An undersized gap causes planks to push against each other and tent at the seam. Remove baseboards, trim the plank edges back to restore the required gap, then replace the molding. "My LVP floor feels spongy or bouncy when I walk on it."

A spongy feel under floating LVP is almost always caused by underlayment that exceeds the manufacturer's thickness specification. Mohawk and Shaw LVP products typically cap foam underlayment at 1.5–2 mm; thicker foam compresses under load, allowing click-lock joints to flex and eventually fail. Subfloor dips greater than 3/16 inch over 10 feet also create unsupported spans that flex underfoot.
